I have an interview for a dispatch position with the state coming up but I need to get a typing certificate first. The states' test was a week ago, I know the on-line tests won't be accepted and Sac City College won't do it 'cause I'm not a student. Anybody know another venue that the state will accept?

Call the Sacramento Urban League. They do testing for some government bodies, but I'm not certain for which.

You might try going through the city http://www.cityofsacramento.org/personnel/employmen.html
They give a number to call to inquire.

I know CPS Human Resources used to offer one, but I'm not sure if they still do http://www.cps.ca.gov/

And I second the Sacramento Urban League.

Good luck :)

Will any of the local temp agencies run a test for you -- assumedly, for a small fee? I know they'll test you if you're working for them (at least ADIA and Apple 1 tested me ... 15 or so years ago when I was temping ... )

I was gonna say... go through a temp agency and just don't accept a job. They test you same-day to see what your skills are for job placement. You can, I believe, request to get a copy after you complete the test.

CoreStaff and ManPower are the only two I've had experience with.

This is what I did. I'm applying for state jobs and they accept these. Was really easy. There's an office off of Franklin Blvd. near Florin Rd.

Forgot to add: you don't need an appointment. Just walk in, fill out a brief info card and within minutes you'll be taking the test.

A list of agencies that give typing tests and issue valid typing certificates is available in the Sacramento County Employment Office or at http://hra.co.sacramento.ca.us/employ/opp/Typing%20Certificate%20Agencies.pdf.

• State Personnel Board (SPB) at (916) 653-1502. The typing test is administered on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays in Sacramento. There is a nominal fee of $5.00. For specific information the web site is: www.spb.ca.gov
• Employment Development Department (EDD) has over 100 job service offices in California. These offices will provide information of schools and organizations that administer the typing test in their area. The State of California Telephone Directory provides locations and telephone numbers of the EDD’s job service offices.
• Business and vocational schools.
• Community colleges.
• High Schools.

Try going to a SETA office or One-Stop Shop Office or EDD employment job services. They can probably help you.
